Who Is Childish Gambino?
Childish Gambino is the musical identity of Donald McKinley Glover Jr. The name itself came from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator Glover used during his early comedy days. While Glover acts, writes, and directs under his own name, Childish Gambino is reserved for his recording career.
Glover is of African American ethnicity. Reports on his height vary slightly: IMDb lists him at 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m), while other sources round it to 5 ft 8½ in (1.74 m). He was born on September 25, 1983, making him 41 years old as of 2025.
Donald Glover is the person; Childish Gambino is the recording alias. Glover has stated in interviews that using a separate name allows him to separate his music from his acting and writing work. The distinction matters for fans looking for his discography versus his filmography.

The follow-up, Because the Internet (2013), produced the major hit “3005,” a track that became a signature moment in his early career. With Awaken, My Love! (2016), Glover shifted toward a funk and soul sound, led by the enduring single “Redbone.”
“Redbone,” from the 2016 album Awaken, My Love!, is one of Childish Gambino’s best-known songs. Its slow groove and falsetto vocals made it a streaming staple. “3005,” from Because the Internet, is a breakthrough rap track that helped define his early sound. Both songs remain among his most-streamed on platforms like Spotify.
“This Is America,” released in 2018 as a standalone single, became his most commercially successful and culturally discussed work. The accompanying music video sparked widespread conversation about race and gun violence in the United States. The track won multiple Grammy Awards.
Other notable tracks include “LES,” which appears on several playlists associated with Childish Gambino’s catalog, and “Strokerton,” a track from his early mixtape Culdesac.
