How does the weather radar work?
The UK’s weather radar network uses 15 ground-based stations that emit microwave pulses. When these hit precipitation, they bounce back, allowing the system to measure intensity and location. The live radar above updates every five minutes, giving you a clear picture of what is heading your way.
What can the radar tell you?
Beyond simple rain detection, the radar distinguishes between different precipitation types. Colour coding on the live radar above indicates intensity: light blues for drizzle, greens for steady rain, and yellows or reds for heavy downpours.
